Why Your iPhone Makes HEIC Files Instead of JPG

Apple moved the camera roll to HEIC in iOS 11 back in 2017, and every iPhone and iPad since then saves pictures that way by default. The container stores the photo with HEVC compression, far more efficient than the decades-old JPEG algorithm: the same picture takes roughly half the space it would occupy as a JPG. The saving is real, and it is why Apple made the switch. What came with it is a compatibility problem. No browser except Safari displays HEIC natively, and Windows will not preview one in Photos or File Explorer until you buy a codec extension from the Microsoft Store. So the file arrives by email, lands in a shared folder, or hits an upload form, and the person on the other side sees something their software refuses to open. Converting to JPG removes that wall, because JPG is the one photo format every device, browser, and application has understood for thirty years.

A HEIC Decoder That Runs on Your Device, Not on a Server

Since browsers cannot decode HEIC on their own, this page loads a HEIC decoder the first time you drop a .heic file in: a WebAssembly build of libheif, fetched on demand and then kept in cache. That one-time download is the only thing that travels over the network. The photo itself never does. Your browser decodes the file, draws it onto a canvas, and writes the JPG with its own built-in encoder, using your processor and your memory. Most free online converters work the opposite way, sending the image to a machine you do not control and holding a copy for a retention window you cannot check, an awkward bargain for a camera roll full of family pictures, receipts, and screenshots. And an iPhone Live Photo is a still image plus a short motion clip: the conversion keeps the still and drops the motion component, because a JPG holds a single frame and nothing else. A multi-image burst resolves to its first frame for the same reason. None of that is a defect, but it is worth knowing before you delete the originals.
